Fixing an "Email Already Taken" Error

Learn why the "email already taken" error appears when adding a User to CompanyCam and how to resolve it based on your situation.

Every CompanyCam account uses a unique email address. If the person you're inviting has a deactivated account somewhere else, we handle that automatically. You'll only see this error if their email belongs to a User who's still active on a different account.

Why this happens

CompanyCam ties every User to one email address, account-wide. When you invite someone, one of 2 things happens:

  • If their email belongs to a deactivated User on your account or anyone else's, we free it up and send your invite automatically. You won't see an error.

  • If their email belongs to a User who's still active on another CompanyCam account, the invite fails. One email can only be active on 1 account at a time.

Resolving an email conflict

Note: You'll need the Admin role to manage Users and resolve most email conflicts on your account.

Check your Team tab first.

  1. Log in to CompanyCam on the web, then click Team in the left sidebar.

  2. Search for the person's name or email address.

    1. If they appear as an active User, they're already on your account. No new invite needed. If the User is having trouble logging in, try updating their login information.

    2. If they appear as deactivated, you can (and should) reactivate them right from there. Reactivating them instead of sending a new invite keeps all of their activity tied to the same account.

Their email is tied to an old or inactive account

If someone used CompanyCam in the past, even with a different company, their email may still be attached to that old account. You won't be able to see or access accounts outside your own. Contact our Support team, and we'll locate the old account and release the email.

Their email is being used on a different CompanyCam account

If the person currently uses CompanyCam through another company, their email is tied to that account. You have 2 options: use a different email address for this User, or contact our Support team to sort out the conflict.

FAQs

Will deactivating a User free up their email?

Deactivating a User from your account will free it from our system so that they can create a new CompanyCam account or be invited to someone else's company account.

Can 1 email be used on 2 different CompanyCam accounts?

No — the same email can't be used on 2 CompanyCam accounts at the same time. Each account requires a unique email address. If someone works with multiple companies that use CompanyCam, each account will need a separate email.

Can a Collaborator's email transfer to a User account?

A Collaborator's email can't be directly transferred to a new User account. Collaborators and Users are separate account types with different email rules. Contact our Support team for help with this transition.

If someone on my crew gets a new device, do I need to send them a new invite to my account?

If someone gets a new device, you do not need to send them a new invite to your account. To make sure they get logged back into your account, have them download the CompanyCam app, then log in with the email and password they had before. If they do not remember their password, they can reset it by clicking 'Forgot Password' on the sign-in screen, or an Admin on the account can reset it for them.
